Jimmy Carter – 39th President of the United States

These are Jimmy Carter’s good things.

Good things to read.

Carter said Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was a favorite because “It showed me that the experiences of our neighbors were not unique, that there were people all over the country who suffered…We still have people like that living in our country.” According to the Carter Center other favorites include War and Peace by Tolstoy as well as work by Dylan Thomas and Miller Williams.

Good things to watch.

IMDB.com quotes Carter as saying “John Wayne was bigger than life. In an age of few heroes, he was the genuine article. But he was more than a hero; he was a symbol of many of the qualities that made America great – the ruggedness, the tough independence, the sense of personal conviction and courage – on and off the screen – that reflected the best of our national character.”  EW reported that Carter’s favorite movie is Gone with the Wind.  Carter screened 480 movies during his time in the White House but finding a complete list was challenging.  His daily diary recorded that he watched Advise and Consent and The Undefeated.

Good things to do.

Woodworking.  President Carter continues to work, making a stool for an upcoming auction.  Fly fishing with Oyster rods were his preference.  Carter also liked to bowl, swim, and ride bikes with his family.  After a day full of activity how did the Carter family wind down? By watching The Bad News Bears.  This was practically their exact day March 26, 1977.

John Lennon – Beatle

This is John Lennon and these are his good things.

What are good things you’ve read?

The Three Stigmata by Dick. According to PhilipKDick.com the book so fascinated Lennon that he considered making a movie about it.

Alice in Wonderland by Carroll.  In his 1980 interview with Playboy Lennon said that images in the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds were from “Alice in Wonderland.”

It was Alice in the boat. She is buying an egg and it turns into Humpty Dumpty. The woman serving in the shop turns into a sheep and the next minute they are rowing in a rowing boat somewhere and I was visualizing that. There was also the image of the female who would someday come save me — a “girl with kaleidoscope eyes” who would come out of the sky. It turned out to be Yoko, though I hadn’t met Yoko yet. So maybe it should be “Yoko in the Sky with Diamonds.”

Dylan Thomas. Who Paul McCartney suggested was the main song writing influence on both Lennon and Bob Dylan.

What are good things you’ve watched?

El Topo.  “It was thanks to John Lennon that the film acquired a worldwide distribution. He was so impressed by this movie that he urged a close friend of his to buy the rights and take charge of distribution.”

When Jimi Hendrix first got started Lennon, Paul McCartney and other Beatles along with Pete Townshend went to hear him play.  Hendrix was so good that Eric Clapton was reported leaving the show saying “You never told me he was that fucking good.”

And what were tours like?  They were like Satyricon.  Lennon said, “we had that image. Man, our tours were like something else, if you could get on our tours, you were in. They were ‘Satyricon,” all right.”

What are good things you use?

Patek Philippe watch.

Spring Court shoes from the Abbey Road cover among others.

Rickenbacker 325 guitar though Lennon admitted he was never especially good at playing one.
